Farah Mohammad
Farah Mohammad (b. 1993, Karachi, Pakistan) is a printmaker and installation artist based in NYC. Employing various printmaking techniques, Mohammad engages with and processes complex feelings arising from working with underserved communities while negotiating her own presence as a Pakistani immigrant in the United States.
Creating prints, breaking images down into
shapes around which the main subject is built, offers opportunity for Mohammad to take emotional inventory of their personal symbolism. Some of Mohammad’s most recent works have been sculptural woodcut prints and monotypes of architectural structures of her hometown. These structures symbolize resilience; from them the artist draws inspiration through images of spaces undergoing change. The work is Mohammad’s visual reality, where her past and present, American and Pakistani identities can
coexist.
Mohammad received a BA from Bennington College and an MFA from Columbia University. Mohammad currently teaches as adjunct faculty at Columbia’s School of the Arts. Exhibition highlights include International Print Center New York (IPCNY), The Jewish Museum, The Wallach Art Gallery, Field Projects (NYC), and Local Project Art Space (LIC, NY). Mohammad was recently the recipient of The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award (2021), Lucas T. Carlson Grant at Columbia University (2020), and IPCNY's Coursework Award (2020). Her work is in the permanent collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art.
